Project Scope:

This project is a key component of a broader initiative to enhance regional wastewater infrastructure. It will install a new force main sewer pipeline to increase system capacity, and better support long‑term development needs within the service area.

As part of the work, a portion of the new pipeline will be constructed beneath the South Fork Catawba River using specialized installation methods suitable for sensitive environmental conditions. This improvement will replace aging infrastructure and ensure more resilient wastewater conveyance for the surrounding communities.

This project is being supported, in whole, or in part, by federal award number CFDA 21.027 awarded to Gaston County by the US Department of the Treasury.

Background:

Gaston County received funding through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) via the State Fiscal Recovery Fund established in S.L. 2021-180. This fund assists eligible units of government with meeting their water/wastewater infrastructure needs. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) offered ARPA funds to Gaston County to partially cover work associated with linking the City of High Shoals and Two Rivers’ sewer systems. The City of High Shoals operates a sewer collection system serving approximately 300 customers, but areas south of the South Fork Catawba River are not currently served and are relying on aged septic systems. Interlocal Agreements are in place for construction, operations and maintenance of a sewer extensions to serve this area of High Shoals.
