Project Scope:
A new waterline will be extended from Lane Road and Hickory Grove Road 3,600 linear feet south along Hickory Grove Road to Old Hickory Grove Road. The line will run along Old Hickory Grove Road 4,600 linear feet and enter the rear of North Belmont Park. The total waterline extension is approximately 11,900 linear feet. The project will provide an opportunity for residents along the alignment to connect to the municipal system.
This project is being supported, in whole, or in part, by federal award number CFDA 21.027 awarded to Gaston County by the US Department of the Treasury.
Background:
Gaston County was awarded Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (Recovery Funding), as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Eligible projects include improving critical infrastructure and utilities for County residents. The County is using portions of this grant money to expand water and sewer services to outlying areas. Public schools, and County amenities as well as communities with capacity and flow rate issues due to aging well systems are a high priority for the ARPA funds.
There are numerous private and community wells in the vicinity of the park. Gaston County continually has difficulty providing adequate, clean drinking water for the park due to ground water and well issues. The drinking water well at the park has been replaced due to low flow and water quality. Additionally, water is not available for irrigation of the playing fields that have experienced increased usage since the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only will this project provide a much needed, reliable source of safe clean drinking water to the park and surrounding community, but it will also aid in fire protection for the community.
