Project Scope:
As part of a broader initiative to improve regional wastewater infrastructure, this project will connect the existing sewer systems of the City of High Shoals and City of Gastonia (Two Rivers). The work includes constructing two new sewer pump stations and installing the force mains required to link these facilities to an existing outfall.
High Shoals currently operates a collection system that serves portions of the city and discharges to an outfall maintained by Two Rivers. This project will enhance the system’s overall capacity and reliability by establishing a new connection between a pump station near the Gaston County Landfill and an existing High Shoals pump station in the surrounding area. These improvements will support long‑term growth and provide more resilient wastewater service for the region.
This project is being supported, in whole or in
part, by Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, federal award
SLFRP0129, awarded to the State of North Carolina by the U.S. Department of
Treasury.
Background:
Gaston County received funding through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) via the State Fiscal Recovery Fund established in S.L. 2021-180. This fund assists eligible units of government with meeting their water/wastewater infrastructure needs. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) offered ARPA funds to Gaston County to partially cover work associated with linking the City of High Shoals and Two Rivers’ sewer systems. High Shoals operates a sewer collection system serving approximately 300 customers, but areas south of the South Fork Catawba River are not currently served and are relying on aged septic systems. Interlocal Agreements are in place for construction, operations and maintenance of a sewer extensions to serve this area of High Shoals.
