Background:
The Gaston County Health Department provides Public Health services at 991 West Hudson Boulevard, Gastonia, North Carolina. The building was constructed and opened in 1989 and has not experienced a complete major upgrade since that time. The facility is approximately 93,000 square feet and consists of numerous small office spaces, long corridors, exam rooms and inadequate wayfinding. There is little flexible space that would allow Public Health the ability to accommodate changing health needs within the community. The project involves an intensive engagement phase where representatives from all internal and external stakeholders provided input. From that space needs process, extensive renovations and upgrades were designed to meet current health provision standards and to provide a space that efficiently meets the needs of community while providing a safe and inviting facility that complies with ADA and HIPAA requirements.
