Project Scope

Since 1987, the Gaston County Sanitary Landfill has served residents and businesses for the disposal of solid waste. The landfill’s permitted areas will carry us for the next five years.

The Gaston County Department of Solid Waste is proposing to expand the Gaston County Landfill within the property boundaries of the current landfill. The expansion would add 10 million cubic yards and extend the life of the landfill by 15 years.

Project Map

Proposed Landfill Expansion

The proposed expansion area is in the center of the landfill property – between the currently active area and the closed section of the landfill. The expansion would also lay on top of part of the closed section.

Using this area will allow us to make most efficient use of the site’s potential. It’s a common-sense solution for our community.

Commitment to Our Community and the Environment

We are committed to protecting our community and natural resources through responsible waste disposal, recycling, and environmental stewardship.

The landfill is currently monitored with 30+ groundwater wells and 16 gas probes, and more will be added as part of this expansion. For environmental monitoring, we collect samples of stormwater runoff and methane gas four times a year and groundwater twice a year.

Community engagement is a critical component of this project and the communities directly surrounding the landfill will be key partners as we look toward the future of the Gaston County landfill.
